60-year-old Jess Colivet has had five children and survived cancer, so it might surprise you that she considers going back to college seven years ago to study creative thinking and design as the “most frightening thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
“The day that I turned up for college, I couldn't even understand the lecturer's words. I had to phonetically write them down, and I came home, opened the front door of the house, and I literally cried my eyes out,” Jess admits. It’s proof that growth can be scary, and changing the game can feel uncomfortable.
“After my cancer treatment, and during that day when I was being wheeled down for my first surgery, I realised that if I got another chance at life, I would seize it by the horns,” Jess explains. “So after I came through my treatment, I decided college and education was something I had staggered on my first time around. And I thought, even though I'm living my life back to front, this was something that I just knew I had to do. I had so much growing to do, I had so much living to do.”
It’s a leap of faith that more than paid off, leading to an incredible career as a personal stylist, helping other people find the confidence to walk into intimidating rooms with their heads held high. “Women and men can find it hard to look in the mirror and really look themselves in the eye and love that person looking back,” says Jess. “They're making excuses – they're too fat, they're too slim, they haven't worked out, whatever they've been through. But when the clothes and the makeup go on, that magic comes alive. It's like fairy dust. It's like somebody has switched on a light. It’s a privilege to get to do what I do.”
Elevating other people is a perk of her job, so it makes sense that The Elevator is Jess’ go-to product. “I have been using the Elevator since it launched and it's absolutely a phenomenal product,” she says. “I absolutely love the ritual of even how you put it on, but what I really love is how the skin on my neck feels.”
What would Jess say to a client who was trying to hide their neck behind scarves and turtlenecks? “Hold yourself high. Show that beautiful neck, it's gorgeous.” She has inspiring words for anyone grappling with imposter syndrome too. “Remember that it's never too late. Don't hold yourself back, don't let the imposter syndrome get in. Get out there, do it, baby steps. Make a call, ask the question. Just go for it.”
